Word Study Homework Information!

A detailed homework sheet will be sent home at the start of each Word Study unit. In each Word Study unit, student will have 10 "High Frequency" words that they will need to learn how to spell.
Students will also work with one or more of our Greek and Latin roots:
Students have a "menu" of choices from which they select activities to complete with their high frequency words each day.
For your convenience, a copy of each unit's homework is sent home via email from Mrs. Carr with our weekly electronic newsletters!

Word Study/Spelling Homework

As I explained at Curriculum Night, Gwinnett County is moving away from the "traditional" method of teaching spelling. Students will be learning WORD STUDY this year. Word Study consists not only of spelling words correctly, but it adds knowledge of Greek and Latin roots so that students can apply the meanings they know to decipher unknown words. Research has shown that over 90% of the words in the English language have Greek or Latin roots... Our school began learning different Greek and Latin roots 2 years ago, and we will build upon this knowledge in 4th grade!
A homework sheet will be sent home during each unit of study. Remember: We will no longer have weekly spelling tests. Each Word Study unit should last between 7 and 9 school days. Students will have the test date for each unit listed on their homework sheets.
